How to Get Your Home Organized when you have ADHD

By TinasTreasures

We think of children in school struggling with ADHD, but those children grow up and many of them become parents and need to run their homes, but it is a struggle. The lack of time management and organizational skills that plagued the ADHD child in school will overwhelm the person, usually the mom, when given a household and children to manage.

A lot of people struggle with clutter, but people with ADHD struggle even more. Here are a few suggestions to help you in your home if you have ADD or ADHD.

Don’t multi task

Most females can multi task, but the ADHD person will start with task 1, add task 2 and forget about task 1. Only do one thing at a time and finish it before moving on to something else.

 Plan your time with lists

Have a list of what you will do, and then plan what you will do next and action it. Less is achieved when you fail to plan. Sticking to your list is important for not getting sidetracked.

Use a timer

Plan to do a job for a specific period of time, say 15 or 30 minutes. Set a kitchen timer and do that job and nothing else for that period of time. This helps to keep you focused. When the timer beeps move on to something else. That way you are not getting bored doing one chore for hours.

Don’t over schedule yourself or your children

When asked to volunteer at your child’s school or to help at your local church, you don’t have to say yes. Look after yourself first and only offer to help if you really do have the time to spare. Also, there are wonderful educational opportunities for your children, but they don’t have to do them all. Over scheduling will only add to your stress and disorganization.

Organize your space

The more clutter you have around you, the more your brain will be cloudy and you won’t be able to think straight. Try and reduce your clutter and you will be able to think more clearly.

Visualize what you want

Look at a messy desk, for instance, and imagine it how you want it, tidy. See in your mind the benefit of organizing and tidying it and your brain will want to do it.

Organize things coming into your home

Don’t let too many things come into your home. Try and reduce what comes into the house and put it away as soon as it does enter the house.

Organize things going out of your home

Try and regularly get rid of stuff going out of your home. Try and let more things go out of your home than comes in.
